JVC PROVIDES WIRELESS LAN FOR REPUBLICAN CONVENTION
Las Vegas, NV (November 18, 1996) -- JVC Information Products Company of America recently provided its VISPLAN-10 Infrared Wireless LAN system for use at the Republican National Convention in San Diego, California.
The networking equipment was utilized by the Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC), a San Diego-based research and engineering company that worked with the Republican National Committee to implement the GOP's Web site, as well as the LAN/WAN infrastructure for over 400 Nodes.
"At the convention, over 2000 radios and 10,000 cell phones were in use," said William Proffer, director of SAIC's Information Management Laboratory. "We needed a LAN setup that would work well in this temporary environment. RF was ruled out because of the interference potential. JVC's infrared wireless LAN was the ideal solution."
Used in the SAIC Command Post at the Republican Convention, JVC's VIPSLAN-10 wireless LAN provided LAN communications for staff members. "We were able to set up the VIPSLAN-10 system without worrying about wired connections, or the fact that we would only be there for a few weeks," said Proffer.
JVC's wireless LAN systems are comprised of three primary configurations: a 360 ceiling-mounted Satellite - Node configuration supporting multiple users, a Station - Station for point-to-point connection, and a PCMCIA Type II card & Mobile unit for direct laptop to Ethernet connection.
VIPSLAN-10 is the only in-facility wireless solution that provides complete Ethernet compatibility and true 10 Mbps data throughput.
Employee-owned SAIC provides high-technology services and products to
industry and government in the areas of system integration, telecommunications,
information technology, transportation, health care, national security,
energy and the environment. SAIC's successful implementation of the GOP
Web site helped provide a forum for the GOP to reach party members. With
annual revenues of $2.2 billion, the company and its subsidiaries have
22,000 employees in more than 350 offices worldwide. Further information
in available on the World Wide Web at www.saic.com.
JVC is a $7 billion international company with more than 20 subsidiary firms, and sells more than $100 million of computer products annually in the United States. JVC Information Products Company of America is a wholly owned subsidiary of US JVC Corporation.
